1. Multimedia History

  • in 1965, was first used to describe a performance that combined
    (combined music, lights, cinema, performace art ) by Bob Goldstein
  • Since then, multi + media
    - Text, audio, images, animations, video and interactive content
  • Late 1970, desktop computer - CD, DVD storage
  • In 1989, tim berners Lee WWW ( World Wide Web ), Multimedia PC
  • In 1990, Broadband computer network
    - information compressions - MPEG
  • Late mobile network and mobile device

  • represented in different media ( Text, Image, Sound, Video, Animation )
  • All the media can be represented digitally ( structured collection of bits )

  • Each digital media can be combined into Multimedia

3. Defintion

  • Narrow
    • multi + media
    • combination of more than two different media types
  • Broader
    • All the technologies involved in expression, storage, transmission of information

5. Characteristics

  • Combined media - integrity
    • Combined information of more than two different medias
  • Duplex comms
    • comms in both directions based upon user request
  • Digital media processing
    • Each media must be digitized before Multimedia - Can have some advantages of digital media processing
  • Stand-alone computer
    • Must be able to process multi-media information on single computer
  • Media interaction
    • Integration and interconnection of different media to provide multi-media applications
  • User interface
    • Easy and convenient way of input / output
  • Massive storage device
    • Need to store massive multimedia data

  • Online : Uses a network
    • WWW
  • Offline : Removable storage medium to carry the data
    • CD-ROM, DVD, USB

2) Page & Time-Based multi-media

  • Page-Based : in 2-D arrangement
    • text, images
    • in the book or magazine, or JPEG images
  • Time-Based
    • sound, video
    • Can be presented in sequence on a timeline

3) Linearity & Nonlinearity

  • Linearity : Film, Book
  • Non-Linearity : Flash, Hypermedia ( WWW )  * links between pages

4) UI ( User Interface )

  • Ways of choices and accepting user input
  • Stylized
  • Conventional

  • De facto : Custom standard
